Nearly 20 years ago, the Krevatas family worked with the Town of Hempstead to install the first “Autistic Child Area” sign on Long Island. In a recent post, Town of Hempstead Supervisor, John Ferretti, reflected on this milestone and celebrated the installation of a new “Autistic Person Area” sign in Franklin Square — an important step in raising awareness and creating safer neighborhoods for individuals on the Autism Spectrum.

“Nearly 20 years ago, the Krevatas family reached out to the Town of Hempstead to install an ‘Autistic Child Area’ sign on their block... Today, the Krevatas twins are all grown up! These signs serve an important purpose of creating a safer, more mindful environment for residents living with autism and their loved ones.”
— John Ferretti, Town of Hempstead Supervisor

This milestone holds special meaning for Kulanu. Inga Krevatas, our OPWDD Service Access Coordinator, continues to advocate for safety, wellbeing, and inclusion for those on the Autism Spectrum.

“Kulanu Academy congratulates Inga Krevatas on her efforts to ensure the safety and wellbeing of those on the Autism Spectrum. On a daily basis, Inga assists families as the liaison between clients, service providers, and community organizations, performing assessments of needs, coordinating services, providing information, and advocating for those with special needs. I am proud to work with residents on practical measures like this that make a real difference in daily life.”

Inga can be reached at 516-569-3083 ext. 255

or Inga.Krevatas@Kulanukids.org for families seeking support or guidance.

Meet Kayla Strube, Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor with Kulanu Works, and a valued member of the Kulanu team since 2024.

Kayla joined Kulanu after meeting the team at a job fair and was immediately drawn to the welcoming environment and the opportunity to help shape a new role within the organization. From day one, she felt like part of the Kulanu family and has since become a trusted and integral member of her division.

One of Kayla’s most meaningful moments was working with a self-advocacy client who experienced a powerful turning point, gaining confidence, recognition, and pride in their voice. That same client later went on to thrive in Kulanu’s Summer Internship Program, a full circle moment that reinforced the impact of individualized support.

What Kayla enjoys most is the trust, flexibility, and collaboration within Kulanu, as well as the opportunity to help programs grow while building strong relationships with clients and families. Being part of Kulanu has shaped her both personally and professionally, and she feels proud to see her future here.

When asked to describe Kulanu in one word, Kayla said:

Devoted.

Thank you, Kayla, for being part of what makes Kulanu so devoted to the people and families we serve. 💙
